In a world where the pursuit of youthfulness is prevalent, the desire to maintain radiant and healthy skin has never been more IN. But lets start rephrasing that. It's 2026 now and fads are gone, influencers are out and happiness and trusting ourselves is in. We have to start looking at skin as a whole.
Healthy skin comes from good choices. Healthy skin is about how we choose to live our days, the micro-momemts, how we move our body & how we manage stress. Excercise/ eat wholefoods & live simply. You can still achieve big things by living simply. Avoid unnecessary stress. Manage your time well and nuture the mind, body & spirit. Treatments WILL help your skin and protect it from premature ageing. But the goal is always healthy skin.
Now lets talk about resurfacing.
Resurfacing the skin is one of the most effective methods for achieving radiant skin. But why is resurfacing so crucial for maintaining skin vitality?
Why does it actually work?
Understanding Skin Resurfacing
Skin resurfacing refers to a range of treatments that work with the skin's texture and tone. They can be non-invasive or surgical and they renew the skin by encouraging cell turnover and collagen production.
Think, microneedling, enzymes, and chemical peels. It is resurfacing the skin.
The Aging Process and Skin Concerns
As we age, our skin naturally undergoes various changes. The production of collagen and elastin diminishes, leading to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and a loss of firmness. Hormones play a HUGE role in our skin, as do environmental factors such as sun exposure, pollution, and lifestyle choices. This can accelerate skin aging, causing uneven skin tone, dark spots, and rough texture.
In my clinic i like to rotate micro-needling, chemical peels and enzyme therapy. I find the rotation makes the appointments more enjoyable as there is variety, a different price point and also different levels of downtime. More importantly i find it targets most concerns. Sun damage, wrinkles , collagen loss & texture. These specific treatments can help restore the skin's vitality and promote healthy and youthful skin. This has been a very considered decision in my clinic.
Benefits of Skin Resurfacing
1. Stimulates Collagen Production
Skin resurfacing techniques stimulate collagen production by triggering a healing response in the skin. This natural regeneration process not only improves your skin's texture but also enhances its elasticity, resulting in a firmer and more bouncy texture.
2. Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles
As skin resurfaces, fine lines and wrinkles become less visible. Procedures like chemical peels and microneedling can effectively exfoliate the skin, revealing a smoother upper layer while minimising the appearance of deeper wrinkles. Promotion of fresh new collagen is the goal here.
3. Improves Skin Tone and Texture
Skin resurfacing addresses issues such as hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and rough texture. By removing dead skin cells and promoting new growth, procedures can enhance the overall tone and texture, creating a more radiant appearance.
4. Enhances the Effectiveness of Skincare Products
When the outer layer of dead skin is removed through resurfacing, it allows active ingredients in skincare products to penetrate more effectively. This means you can maximise the benefits of serums, moisturisers, and treatments, working toward healthier, more youthful skin.
It has to WORK. It has to do what it says it will. Skincare works much better without dead skin in the way.
Choosing the Right Resurfacing Treatment
Good news! They all work! It is still a decision that is best made my a pro. What will work for you wont work for others. Everyone has different skin and it is important to work with your skin type.
Micro-Needling
My fave! A minimally invasive procedure that involves the use of fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. This process stimulates the body's natural healing response, promoting collagen and elastin production, which can lead to improved skin texture and appearance.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels use various acids to exfoliate the skin's surface. Superficial peels target the uppermost skin layer, while medium and deep peels penetrate further, addressing deeper skin concerns. Great for texture & collagen promotion
Laser Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing utilises focused light to vaporise damaged skin. It’s a highly precise method that can treat various skin issues, including wrinkles, scarring, and pigmentation. Can be very hit and miss for pigment but if i was to choose i would go IPL.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a gentle exfoliation technique that removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells using a diamond-tipped wand or microcrystals. It's effective for improving texture and is suitable for those with sensitive skin. Really quite an old school treatment now but i actually love using my machine before a chemical peel as an add on. The results speak for themselves.
Enzyme Therapy
Enzyme therapy is designed to bring the skin back into balance. homeostasis. This unique treatment contains living enzymes that stimulate your own natural enzymes to speed up cellular processes within the skin. It delivers fresh nutrients and oxygen to essentially ‘spring clean’ your skin by removing toxins, stagnant blood, lymph build up and dead cell material through the lymphatic system. This true form of oxygen therapy will then improve skin function and strengthen underlying structures by combining state of the art botanical science with innovative technology.
It was designed to strengthen and repair the natural integrity of the skin, creating a healthy environment for cells to live and thrive in. Enzyme therapy is highly transformative to the integrity of your skin. I have seen it with my own eyes. This treatment has a cult like following.
Post-Treatment Care
After undergoing a resurfacing treatment, proper skincare is crucial to maintaining results.
Hydration: Keep your skin well hydrated and moisturised. I provide teh aftercare for 2/3 days after the procedure.
Sun Protection: Always apply SPF. Resurfaced skin is more sensitive to uv rays, and protecting it from the sun will help your results last longer.
Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild cleanser to avoid irritation. Avoid harsh actives or exfoliants for at least a week post-treatment. Keep the skin clean.
Chow for now!
