The saying "Chicken soup is good for the soul" truly is.
This ancient broth is the most nutritious dish on the planet!
Its a global tradition.
Ancient chinese believe chicken soup, especially with herbs like ginger and goji berries, helped boost qi (life force) and replenish blood—especially after childbirth!
The Jewish call it "Jewish penicillin." Chicken soup has been the go-to for colds, flu, and emotional fatigue.
In Europe it was given to women after birth to restore strength, warm the womb, and support milk production and in Africian tradition , slow-simmered soups with bones, spices, and vegetables are the main dish for postpartum woman and the go-to for any illness.
Here’s a cozy and classic Grandma’s chicken soup recipe.
I ate this for 3 weeks postpartum. It's hearty, healing, and full of love.
Grandma’s Postpartum Healing Chicken Soup
🧄 Ingredients:
1 whole organic chicken (about 1.5–2 kg) or 4 chicken thighs with skin & bones
1 tablespoon ghee or olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced (natural antibacterial and great for milk supply)
4 carrots, chopped
2 celery stalks, sliced
1 zucchini, chopped (gentle and easy to digest)
1 small piece of fresh ginger, sliced (anti-inflammatory and warming)
1 teaspoon turmeric (natural anti-inflammatory)
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar (helps extract minerals from bones)
2 handfuls spinach or kale, chopped (added at the end)
1 bunch parsley, finely chopped (vitamin C & iron)
1 teaspoon sea salt
Pepper
10 cups water or homemade broth
🍼 Optional Add-Ins:
½ cup cooked quinoa or brown rice for energy
1 tablespoon miso paste (add at the end, for gut health)
A squeeze of lemon juice to enhance iron absorption
🍲 Instructions:
Start with the Chicken: Place chicken and water into a large pot. Add the apple cider vinegar and let sit for 20 minutes (this helps pull minerals from the bones). Then bring to a gentle boil.
Fry the flavour: In a separate pan, warm ghee or butterl. Sauté onion, garlic, carrots, celery, and zucchini until softened. Add turmeric and ginger. Stir well.
Combine & Simmer: Add veggies to the soup pot. Reduce to a low simmer and cook for 1.5–2 hours, uncovered. This long simmer brings out all the healing nutrients.
Shred Chicken: Remove chicken, cool slightly, and shred the meat. Discard bones and skin. Return shredded meat to the pot.
Add the Greens" In the last 5–10 minutes, stir in spinach and parsley.
Finish & Serve:" Season with sea salt and pepper. Add optional lemon juice or miso for extra flavor and healing
🌿 Why It's Perfect for Postpartum:
Collagen & minerals from the bones help heal tissues and joints.
Ginger, turmeric, and garlic reduce inflammation and support digestion.
Greens and herbs replenish iron and key vitamins lost in birth.
Warming and easy-to-digest, which is ideal for the early weeks postpartum.
Simmer, enjoy, relax & replenish.
